ZONE7 JUNIOR BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010 - April 29th, 2010

The 2010 Junior Bowls Championships for the South Coast (Zone7) was held at the Narooma Bowling Club on 13, 14 and 15 April 2010.

The Championships are between the four Districts, which make up Zone 7, these are the South Coast District Bowling Association (SCDBA), the Central South Coast District Bowling Association (CSCDBA), the Far South Coast District Bowling Association and the Monaro District Bowling Association (MON).
The championships consists of three disciplines , Singles, Pairs and Fours and these events are contested by Junior Bowlers under the age of 18 , both boys and girls who have qualified to play in this event by winning the disciplines in their district championships.
Singles- 13April

The draw for the Singles event was; Semi Final 1, SCDBA’s Champion Dylan Skinner from the Bomaderrie Bowls Club against the CSCDBA’s Champion Matthew Meijer from the Tuross Head Country Club. This game was taken out by Matthew Meijer with a score line of 25 to 22 .Both Matthew and Dylan played some great draw shots in this game , Dylan got away to a great start leading Matthew by as much as 12-4, but Matthew clawed his way back into the game with some accurate draw bowls and came away at the finish to win 25 to 22. Semi Final 2, FSCDBA’s Champion Dylan Cuthbert from the Bega Bowls Club against the MON’s Champion Beau Morris from the Adominaby Bowls Club. This event was taken out by Dylan Cuthbert with a score of 25 to 17, and was to strong on the day for Beau, who tried hard and showed lots of promise for the future.

The Final was a match between Matthew Meijer and Dylan Cuthbert, this was a very keenly contested game between two mates. This game was pretty even until end number 9, when Matthew played a number of short and long bowls dropping 7 shots in 3 ends to trail 17 to 8, He then clawed his way back to 18 -17. Dylan was not to be denied and trailed the jack with his last bowl to pick up 4 shots making the scoreline of 22-17 Matthew tried hard to to get back in the game and closed to be 22-19, but then dropped 3 shots on the next end . .

Fours-14April
The draw for the fours was CSCDBAs Matthew Meijer, (Tuross Head),Anthony Mc Kenna (Bermagui) Max Dudman (Batemans Bay)and Teagan Stuart (Moruya) against a inexperienced team from the Monaro consisting of Cassandra Pinner, Scott Myers, Matthew Pinner and Billy Peckover all from Adaminaby. This game was a very one sided affair with the CSCDBA team winning 43-3 although the Monaro team never stopped trying. In the other game the SCDBA’s team of Sarah Boddington, Matt Flanagan, Dylan Skinner (Bomaderrie) and Skip Tom Shapcott (Huskisson) were up against the FSCDBA team of James Squires, Chris Willburger, Justin Mc Garrity and Thomas Griffin from Eden. This game was a very keenly contested event with some very accurate bowling being the order of the day, however the SCDBA side proved to strong at the end and won this game 16-11.

The final of the fours was between the SCDBA side and the CSCDBA side. This game was to be the most exiting game of these championships with shots hard to come by. The duals of the leads between Sarah and Matthew resulted in many resting touchers with a solid points victory going to Matthew. After 18 ends of battle there was nothing separating the 2 teams at 16 all, and an extra end was required to gain a result, watching these bowlers in action was like being at a boxing match punching and counterpunching with the final result a win by 2 shots for the CSCDBA 18-16 over their more fancied opposition from the SCDBA. The standard of bowls in this game was of the highest order and all 8 bowlers involved are be congratulated on their performances

Pairs-15 April
The draw between MONARO pair of Jamie-Lee Morris and Skip Beau Morris and the CSCDBA pair of Matthew Meijer (sub) and Skip Max Dudman was a very close encounter at the end, but early in the game Jamie-Lee and Beau Morris got a flyer, skipping away to a lead of 12-0, and 17-3 before the CSCDBA’s pairing of Matthew Meijer and Max Dudman started getting their range and running out winners at 20-17 The FSCDBA pair of Justin Mc Garrity and Thomas Griffin took on the SCDBA pair of Dylan Skinner and Skip Tom Shapcott the 2009 NSW Pairs Champions. In this match the experience of 12 year old Dylan Skinner (2009 SouthPacific Under16 Singles runner up ) and Tom Shapcott a previous Zone 7 Pairs winner with his older brother Ben 2007 really showed and they accounted for the FSCDBA Pair with a score of 20 -10 after 18 ends ..

The final of the Pairs came down to a match between the SCDBA’s Pair of Dylan and Tom versus the CSCDBA Pair of Matthew Meijer and Max Dudman. All four of these Juniors have played in a number of events with or against each other, this match promised to be a good one and it turned out that way. This game was played in a good but competitive spirit and there was little between them until end 14 where Matthew and Max were clinging to a 1 shot lead 14-13 when disaster struck dropping no less than 7 shots , there was to be no come back final score of 24-16 with victory going to the SCDBA Pair of Dylan Skinner and Tom Shapcott .

Congratulations go to the Zone 7 winners, they were
Singles-Dylan Cuthbert Bega FSCDBA
Fours- Matthew Meijer(Tuross Head), Anthony Mc Kenna,(Bermagui) Max Dudman (Batemans Bay) and Teagan Stuart (Moruya) CSCDBA.
Pairs- Dylan Skinner and Tom Shapcott Bomaderrie/Huskisson SCDBA.
We wish you all the best when you compete in the NSW Playoffs in July2010.
