2008 - What a Year !!!!!

The 2008 Eurobodalla winter netball season has been yet another success for the Tuross Club. We had a total of 9 teams enter the competition in various age groups and divisions. We finished the season with 5 of our teams making the grand final and 4 of them taking out the Premiership in their relevant divisions.

Netta is where it all begins with the minimum age being 8. Our netta team Tuross Telly Tubbies were coached this year by Bronwyn Carter. A team of lively young girls eager to learn the basic skills of the game. Rules are modified for the benefit of the players but they still play on a full size court and the goal ring is only 8 feet instead of 10. A smaller ball is used and rules for contact, obstruction and stepping are not taken so seriously. The coaches normally umpire the game and are encouraged to coach and help the players throughout the duration of the match.

Once the players turn 10 they then step up into the competitive level of the game. Our 10 year team Tuross Tiger Lillies were coached this year by Kerrie Donovan and Stephanie Foster.

A combination of netta players from last year with a few new
players to the game. They adjusted quite quickly to the competition of the game learning the proper rules and controlled by experienced umpires. The TigerLillies played hard all season to secure their place in the grand final against Offshore Pippies on Saturday 20th September. They were very excited and very worthy of the winning score 13/11.

Tuross Twisties are our 11 year team coached by Donna Bouten and Karen Johnstone. This team dominated the 11 year competition throughout both rounds. They were challenged by The Wicked Waves team in semi-finals but fought back to determine their right to play in the grand final. A team of talented players who have gelled so well together as friends and a team.

They played their heart out on grand final day and were sadly defeated once again by The Waves team in what was a very close and nail biting game. There was only 6 goals difference in the final score 18/12

The under 12’s division is the last year of junior netball competition. Tuross Terriers were coached this year by two of our talented senior players Jenna Clements and Cassie Staples. With many talented players in this team they were sure to succeed in their division. They convincingly won their grand final against Broulee Bolts 37/15. It is the 12 year age group when players start to consider playing representative netball for the following year. Selectors start to scan the courts looking for potential players who could represent Eurobodalla in the State Age Championships.

Tuross has had many players throughout the years selected
from this division and gone ahead to become not only better players but great ambassadors of the game and our Club.

The Intermediate section caters for the13-15 year age group and is split into divisions depending on the number of registrations received each year. This year there were two divisions and Tuross had teams entered in both Division 1 and Division 2.

Tuross Tornadoes played Div 2 and were coached by Vesna Stojanovska. They had a fun season learning lots along the way and all the players improved greatly. Unfortunately they didn’t finish in the top four positions but a lot of their matches ended in very close results. Tuross Turbos played in the Intermediate Division 1 and were coached by Kerrie Sands. Kerrie has coached the core of this team for 8 years now and they have grown and developed into an extremely top class act. Undefeated this season they sat quite comfortably on the top of the ladder and were well rewarded with a grand final win against a very determined Fierce Waves team 41 goals to 33.

Once players turn 16 they then move into the Senior division and again this is split into divisions, Senior A, Senior B and Senior C. Tuross Titans and Tuross Troopers were both placed in the Senior A division for the 2008 season. This is the first time Tuross
club has ever had two teams in Senior A competing against each other.

Senior A Tuross Troopers L-R Malinda, Steph, Jenna, Lenna, Emily, Bonnie, absent Eve and Cassie.

Both A teams played a very high standard of netball at this level and both finished in the top four positions on the ladder. Coach of the Troopers, Luise Clements has been with this team for several years now and has achieved many highlights during that time.

They are well drilled and play hard, but with injuries and a few players missing in the semi –finals they were unfortunately piped at the post by 4 goals. Mark Carradus, team manager and Club President has been the driving force behind this team all season and
was proud of the girls and their efforts considering they played the semi’s with one player short

Front L-R Lauren and Ally.

Tuross Titans Senior A are also a team of talented players with loads of knowledge and experience on the netball court. To finish on top of the ladder in this division is something to be proud of.

To play centre court in the Match of the Day on grand final day is awesome. To win The Senior A grand final is memorable. This is the first year Tuross has ever taken home the Senior A Cup and the players have to be congratulated in what was a very close match against Narooma Glaciers. Only 3 goals the difference with the final score 29/26

Senior C Tuross Tofts back L-R Shelley, Cheryl, Karen , Sue, Tara, Front L-R Jess, Tamika, Tegan

Tuross TOFTS ( Too Old For This Shi??) our senior C team were a mixed bag of players with some of our mothers making a comeback and a few old faces returning to the game. Backed up by the youth of the team they were out to have fun and make the most of their Saturday afternoons on the court. They probably lost more games than they won but they had a good time and survived the season with minimal injuries.

We concluded the season with our Annual Presentations on Saturday 20th September at the Tuross Country Club. Our youngest netta team received medallions with all other players received trophies for their contribution and effort this year. Jenna is the first for Tuross Netball Club to make this selection and the first in Eurobodalla and Moruya High School. Jenna is an extremely talented goal shooter and you will see her every day of the season down at the courts practicing her 100—200 goals per day. Well done and well deserved Jenna.

Life Membership was awarded to the founder of the club Leanne Bell.

From humble beginnings to what has become one of the strongest clubs in the Eurobodalla Shire, the Tuross Netball Club has a history that grew from passion not only for the sport itself but for the sport in our local community.

The success of our club is due to the ever evolving drive and commitment of it’s members, parents, committee and most of all the players. At the very beginning, some 14 years ago, there were a small group of young women who were sitting around a dining
room table when the idea to start a netball club in Tuross began.

These founding members built the club with true heart and soul and with a vision that knew no boundaries. We started with a grass court on Kyla Oval that had to be mowed every week and the boundaries painted on by hand with a line marker. The goal posts were erected manually before each game. Many of our hubbies would willingly come and help us out each week, they knew we were determined to get this club going. We started with a local Thursday night competition that grew from 2-4 teams to 6-8 teams. Eventually funding was fought for, council was relentlessly petitioned and with the support of the Tuross Community and the then Kyla Park Management Committee an asphalt court was laid.

That is now our established court for training and the home ground of Tuross Netball Club.

Then came the arduous task of forming a committee, promoting the game and the fundraising. This was all done for a very long time by one person. She was President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Registrar, Uniform Coordinator, Fundraiser, coach
and umpire, mother, wife and she also somehow managed to work full time. She implemented all of the guidelines that have held this club above the rest of any other within Eurobodalla and she will forever be a testament to the success of the Tuross Netball Club.
We want her to know that the generosity of all her blood, sweat and tears, her dedication, drive and passion for the game will never be forgotten and forever be acknowledged by our club and its members. It is for all of these reasons that we honor one of the pioneers
of the Tuross Netball Club with Life Membership.

Congratulations Leanne Bell!!
